The 12-year-old cousin of a rising Tennessee high school football star shot dead in December was killed Saturday night, police said.
Jajuan Hubert Latham was shot in the head in Knoxville just hours after an event that honored his slain cousin, Zaevion Dobson, NBC station WBIR reported.
Zaevion, 15, died while shielding three friends from a hail of gunfire; President Barack Obama used his death as a platform to call for tighter gun laws, tweeting: "Zaevion Dobson died saving three friends from getting shot. He was a hero at 15. What's our excuse for not acting?"
Investigators believe Jajuan was killed Saturday night while sitting in the back seat of his father's SUV, which was at a park in Knoxville. Gunfire erupted between two vehicles that were driving by the park, and a large group gathered there, police said in a statement.
Jajuan's father rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he died shortly after 11 p.m. ET, police said.
"The violence has got to stop," Police Chief David Rausch said Sunday at a news conference, according to WBIR. "We do not need to bury any more children."
The Saturday event, the Bobby Maze Celebrity Basketball Game, also aimed to raise awareness about gun violence.
