Two people leaped from an interstate highway bridge into an Arkansas river to avoid a semi truck sliding toward a crash scene and only one was rescued, the State Troopers said Saturday.

About 2 a.m. Saturday, several vehicles crashed on the Red River Bridge on I-30 west of Hope, troopers said in a press release, and several people got out onto the bridge. A cargo truck approaching the scene began sliding toward the crash and two people leaped into the river to escape. One person was rescued, but a search Saturday failed to find the other, troopers said.

Searchers were going back to the scene on Sunday to see if they could find the person.

Arkansas was hit by snow Friday night and early Saturday, causing hundreds of wrecks across the state. In Little Rock, some motorists reported being stranded for hours in traffic unable to move in icy conditions. Many people abandoned their vehicles, state troopers said.
