Swaths of Australia are burning.

Extreme heat and a prolonged drought have fueled large-scale fires across the continent. The fires have killed at least 17 people, including eight who have died since Monday, and burned more than 10 million acres.

This map shows the current state of the wildfires in Australia.

The maps below show how the fires have spread across the region, including the states of New South Wales and Victoria, since the start of December.
