Marine rescue workers struggled to help free a juvenile humpback whale for a second day on Wednesday, after it became stranded at Palm Beach on the Gold Coast, in Queensland, early Tuesday evening.

Efforts by Sea World staff to drag the 30-foot long whale back out to sea proved unsuccessful when ropes used to try to move the 15-ton mammal snapped three times.

Rescuers were able to briefly return the whale to sea before it became stuck on a sandbar further offshore, and were forced to suspend the operation as fading light hampered efforts.
