The distraught mother of a victim of the deadly New Year's Eve stampede in Shanghai had to be supported by others as she visited the site for a memorial to those killed along the historic waterfront.

The chaos began about a half-hour before what was supposed to be a joyful celebration of the start of 2015. In the end, 36 were dead and 47 people were hospitalized, including 13 who were seriously injured, according to the Shanghai government.
