TORONTO – Former porn actor and escort Luka Magnotta was found guilty Tuesday of first-degree murder in the dismemberment of a Chinese student. The 32-year-old Canadian had admitted to killing Jun Lin, 33, defiling a corpse, videotaping the acts, and mailing parts of the body to elementary schools and political parties in 2012. However, he had pleaded not guilty on grounds of mental illness.
Magnotta was also found guilty of committing an indignity to a human body, publishing and mailing obscene material, and criminally harassing Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and other members of Canada’s parliament.
He fled to Europe after the killing and was the subject of an international manhunt. He was arrested in a Berlin Internet cafe, where he was reading about his own case.
During the trial, jurors saw surveillance video showing Magnotta letting his victim into his Montreal apartment building and, a day later, carrying out a large square suitcase exactly like one which was later found behind the building with some of Lin’s body parts in it.
