German tourist killed, daughter injured in gondola-ferry collision in Venice

A German man was killed and his 3-year-old daughter was injured when the gondola they were in collided with a “water bus” on Venice's Grand Canal Saturday, authorities said.

The 50-year-old man, his wife and three children were all thrown into the water by the force of the collision, the BBC reported.

A fire brigade spokesman said the man appeared to have been crushed between the boats, Reuters reported. The girl was taken to a hospital with a head injury.

Venice is famous for its canals, plied but a variety of watercraft. Gondolas, once the main mode of transportation in Venice, are still popular with tourists. The other boat involved in the accident was a water bus, known as a vaporetto. The large motorboats operate like city buses in Venice.

Authorities said the accident occurred near the famous Rialto bridge.

Recent accidents in which tourists were thrown into canals from gondolas have raised questions about safety on the waterways, the BBC reported.
