A major police hunt was underway in the Netherlands Tuesday after a man was shot dead by a hooded suspect in a residential street near Amsterdam.

Officers were looking for a brown van that may have been used in the shooting, which took place close shortly after noon local time (6 a.m. ET) near two schools in the northern suburb of Zaandam.

Police appealed for witnesses to the attack to come forward.

A picture widely shared on social media showed a body in the street close to a hooded man dressed in black carrying what appeared to be an automatic weapon.

Dutch media identified the victim as a convicted drug dealer with links to well-known criminals, but police did not confirm any of the reports.

The street was littered with spent bullet cases, according to one report.
