As McAuliffe ad spending surged, Cuccinelli's flatlined

Terry McAuliffe (D) and Ken Cuccinelli (R) appear to be headed in opposite directions with less than two weeks to go until Election Day.

As polls have shown McAuliffe opening a lead in the race for Virginia governor, he has increased ad spending. Cuccinelli's spending, on the other hand, appears to be flatlining, according to an analysis by Smart Media Group Delta, a Republican ad-tracking firm.

In the past three weeks, McAuliffe and groups supporting him have nearly tripled Cuccinelli and allies in broadcast, cable, and radio ad buys, $3 million to $1.2 million.

By week:

10/7: McAuliffe: $1 million to $687,000

10/14: McAuliffe: $1.1 million to $415,000

10/21: McAuliffe: $904,000 to $136,000

Overall, a total of $21 million has been spent on the race -- 60 percent of that, or $12. 6 million, has been spent in support of McAuliffe, the former Democratic party chairman and Clinton ally. Former President Bill Clinton will campaign for McAuliffe this weekend. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did so last weekend.

Cuccinelli and groups supporting him have spent 8.6 million so far.

What's striking, according to the analysis, is that while McAuliffe is maintaining a pace of about $1 million a week for the past month, Cuccinelli hasn't spent $1 million on ads in any single week the entire campaign.
