North Korea fired seven surface-to-air missiles into the East Sea, which lies between the Korean peninsula and Japan.

A South Korean defense ministry official confirmed the launches. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is believed to have attended the launch.

The North routinely test launches weaponry timed to the annual military drills being jointly conducted by the U.S. and South Korea.
