Penelope Cruz talks being 'pregnant and a pirate'

"A beautiful experience," is how Penelope Cruz describes being "pregnant and a pirate," the "Pirates of the Caribbean" actress told Vogue in her first interview that details her experience as a mother.

Motherhood is something Cruz has kept close to the cuff since she had her baby, Leonardo, in January. In fact, Cruz and husband Javier Bardem didn't even announce the birth for a full week after he was born.

"From the first second, you feel so much love,” she tells the magazine. “It is a revolutionary experience. That’s the best way I can describe it. It transforms you completely, in a second. Nature is very wise and gives you nine months to prepare, but in that moment — when you see that face, you are transformed forever.”

Cruz has always been interested in giving back, as the piece details, but being a mother intensified that feeling.

“Even if you were aware of children and felt compassion, when you have your own, it multiplies,” she told Vogue. “It breaks your heart to know that there are so many children in the world suffering so much.”
