A Thai girl splashes water at an elephant as people celebrate ahead of the Songkran Festival for the traditional Thai New Year in Ayutthaya province on Wednesday.

The annual elephant Songkran Water Festival is held to promote the tourism industry prior to the three-day Songkran Festival, held from April 13-15, and is celebrated with splashing water and putting powder on each other's faces as a symbolic sign of cleansing and washing away the sins from the old year.
