A surfer was killed in a shark attack Monday morning in Australia, just miles down the beach from a non-fatal shark attack the day before.
New South Wales police said the attack occurred just before 10 a.m. at Shelly Beach, south of Byron Bay. A group of surfers rushed the victim ashore after the attack and performed first aid, but were unable to save his life.
On Sunday, another man was the victim of a non-fatal shark attack just 12 miles to the south of Shelly Beach, Australia's Channel 7 News reported. Byron Bay surfer Jabez Reitman, 35, suffered a large wound on his back and bite marks on his hip from the attack.
Police closed a 7 1/2-mile stretch of beach Monday near where the attacks occurred.
