A man died and another was seriously injured Tuesday after they were hit by a car while riding on a shopping cart down a steep street, Australian police said.

A 28-year-old Swedish national was catapulted out of the metal cart and landed on the curb following the collision in Sydney, according to the New South Wales Police.

He died at the scene following the incident in the suburb of Randwick at around 12:20 a.m. Tuesday (8:20 a.m. ET Monday).

The other man, who was also aged 28 and Swedish, was standing at the back of the cart and was hospitalized with serious injuries after the crash, police said.

The Associated Press reported that authorities were investigating whether the pair were under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
