A suspected U.S. drone strike killed at least nine suspected militants in Pakistan on Sunday, government and security officials told NBC News. Pakistani government and security officials said the drone fired two missiles and struck a militant compound in the Shawal valley of the restive region of North Waziristan.
The dead were all believed to be militants, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press. The Pakistani army is currently waging a months-long operation against Taliban and al-Qaeda-linked militants who have controlled North Waziristan for years.
