Tom Kotzur took this photo of Mount Hood in Oregon at sunset in July 2011. Kotzur told TODAY.com that he snapped the picture on the last day of a trip to the Northwest. Kotzur and his wife, who are from Hendersonville, Tenn., also visited Mount St. Helens, the Olympic National Park and Mount Rainier.
After a break in the daylong rainy and misty weather, Kotzur drove "like crazy" toward the mountain, which is 11,239 feet tall, to get a good vantage point.
"I snapped the mountain through many stages of sunset, amazed at the images that I was capturing," Kotzur said. "The sun was setting behind me and the light was streaming through breaks in the cloud in back of me, hitting the mountain and the clouds and fog wrapped around it."
