LONDON - Vandals defaced a memorial to victims of the July 7 bombings in London on the anniversary of the 2005 attacks.

London's Metropolitan Police received a report early Monday morning that memorial in Hyde Park had been targeted. Authorities said the graffiti - written in red and black paint - was later washed off and that an investigation is underway. Fifty-two commuters died when four suicide bombers struck the U.K. capital's transport network at the height of rush hour on July 7, 2005.
