Breakthrough Star Shawn Mendes Turns Vine Fame Into Music Career

For Shawn Mendes, the rise to fame started on Vine after his six-and-a-half-second videos went viral.

Six and a half seconds isn’t a long time, but it was enough for pop sensation Shawn Mendes.

The singer, equipped with his acoustic guitar, used social media platform Vine to post cover songs and his following grew. Record labels caught wind of his strong social media presence – and legions of screaming fans.

He signed with Island Records and, in seemingly a flash, his social stardom helped catapult him to the top of the pop charts. Both his single and EP debuted at the top spot on iTunes within 30 minutes of their release.

Some people have likened Mendes to Justin Bieber, and he’s okay with that comparison. He currently has 1.6 million Twitter followers, 1.7 million on Instagram and 3 million on Vine.

“It’s like a complete army of people on social media right now and I would never of expected it would have this much power,” Mendes said. “It’s just insane.”

It’s easy to forget that Mendes is just a teenager -- he turned 16 on August 8.

“This is like the best summer ever,” he said.
