House Speaker Paul Ryan has formally invited President Barack Obama to deliver his final State of the Union address on January 12, 2016.

In a formal letter of invitation, Ryan wrote that lawmakers and Congress "owe it to the American people to present solutions that address the challenges they face."

"In that spirit, it is my honor to invite you to deliver your State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 in the House Chamber," he wrote.

The address would be the earliest since 1977, when the State of the Union was also on January 12th.

It is slated to be given at 9pm ET.
