Rep. Rush Holt of New Jersey will not seek re-election.

"There is no hidden motive for my decision," Holt, a Democrat, said in a statement, "As friends who have worked with me know, I have never thought that the primary purpose of my work was re-election and I have never intended to make service in the House my entire career."

Holt, who previously worked as a research physicist, is a five-time winner of “Jeopardy!” who won in competition against IBM supercomputer “Watson.”

Holt is the eighth Democrat to announce retirement at the end of this term. Eleven Republicans have done the same.

His district is solidly Democratic.
