NBC News has confirmed that Rep. John Dingell (D-MI) -- the longest-serving member of Congress in history -- will not run for re-election this year.

It will conclude his nearly 60-year career in Congress (1955 thru 2014).

It's a safe Democratic seat; Obama won it in 2012 getting 66% of the vote there.

Dingell told the Detroit News: "I'm not going to be carried out feet first," he said. "I don't want people to say I stayed too long."

He is 87 years old (born July 8, 1926).
