House Republicans from New York joined state and local GOP leaders in calling for Santos to step down less than a week after he officially took office.
The speaker did not embrace calls for Santos to resign. Members of both parties warn that putting Santos on key committees could be a national security risk.
Retiring GOP Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas said Rep.-elect Santos would need to “take some huge steps” to regain public trust. “This is troubling in so many ways," he said. "Certainly, he’s lied repeatedly."
