V. Stiviano, the companion of embattled Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling, was attacked by two men in New York City on Sunday evening, her lawyer confirmed to NBC News.

Stiviano was leaving a restaurant near the Gansevoort Hotel in Manhattan when “two men” approached her and “punched her on the right side of her face several times,” her lawyer, Mac Nehorary, said.

The incident was originally reported by The website reported Stiviano was beaten up by two white men who struck her and yelled slurs at her. The website also reported she managed to run away and several witnesses then attempted to apprehend the alleged attackers.

“The story is true,” Nehorary said of the report.

Stiviano became a media sensation after her cellphone recordings of Sterling making offensive remarks were made public.
