Vice President Joe Biden will join pop star Lady Gaga on stage at the Oscars on Sunday to spotlight the issue of campus sexual assault.
Biden will introduce Lady Gaga’s performance of “Til It Happens to You,” a nominee for best original song, according to a White House official. The song was featured in the documentary “The Hunting Ground,” which deals with campus rape.
Biden will use the opportunity to promote the White House’s “It’s On Us” campaign against sexual assault, according to the official. The Obama administration launched the campaign last September.
Biden, who drafted the Violence Against Women Act as a senator, has long been outspoken on the issues of domestic and sexual violence.
In November, the White House released an op-ed, written by Biden, titled “It’s On Us to Stop Campus Sexual Assault." It calls on students across college campuses to speak out against sexual assault and “create an environment where sexual assault is unacceptable, and all survivors are supported."
The op-ed appeared online and in college newspapers to coincide with a “week of action,” in which Biden traveled to campuses to spread the word about the issue.
Biden will attend the Oscars with his wife, Dr. Jill Biden.
The ceremony will take on Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles at 8:30 p.m ET.
