Thousands of Police Attend Funeral for Slain NYPD Officer
Police salute during the playing of the U.S. National Anthem outside the Christ Tabernacle Church at the start of the funeral of New York Police Officer Rafael Ramos at the Christ Tabernacle Church in Queens, New York., on Dec. 27.
Ramos and Officer Wenjian Liu were slain last Saturday afternoon while sitting in their patrol car in Brooklyn. Police officers from departments around the country attended the funeral service.
Family members of New York City Police Officer Rafael Ramos, including his son, Jaden Ramos, center, and his wife Maritza Ramos, right, arrive before funeral services.
The killings of the two officers have ramped up emotions in the already-tense national debate over police conduct. Gunman Ismaaiyl Brinsley, before he attacked Ramos and Liu, had referenced in online posts the high-profile killings by white police officers of unarmed black men. Brinsley committed suicide soon after shooting the officers.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and wife Chirlane McCray walk past a sea of policemen while arriving for the funeral.
Police union officials have criticized de Blasio, saying he contributed to a climate of mistrust toward police amid protests over the deaths of black men at the hands of white officers.
