The heights of love

These vertically challenged celebrity couples don’t let their differences in stature get in their way.

What's a little height difference when you're in love? Sometimes it's the female of the species who's tall and the male who's small; other times it's vice versa. Either way, attraction often trumps altitude. For example, Tom Cruise was trading up (comparatively) when he popped the question to one-time "Dawson's Creek" cutie Katie Holmes at the top of the Eiffel Tower in 2005; after all, ex-wife Nicole Kidman towered 3 and a half inches over him, while Suri's mom is only 2 inches taller. Now that's something worth jumping on a couch about!

Six-foot-2 actor Dax Shepard hit new career heights with comedies like "Employee of the Month" and "Baby Mama." Kristen Bell is only 5'1", but has a high entertainment profile with TV's "Veronica Mars" and the film "When in Rome." The couple started dating in 2007 and became engaged in February 2010.

Stacy Ann Ferguson, better known by her stage name of Fergie, regularly tops the record charts both solo and as part of Black Eyed Peas, even though she's only 5-foot-2. In 2004 she started dating 6-foot-3 1/2 Hollywood hunk Josh Duhamel, and they tied the knot in January 2009.

Granddaughter of Willy Wonka creator Roald Dahl and actress Patricia Neal, writer Sophie Dahl is no longer a plus-size model as she was in her teens -- but she still has a considerable plus in height over award-winning English musician Jamie Cullum. Sophie, who met Cullum at a breast cancer charity event where they performed two songs together, seems to have a thing for musicians -- reportedly, she was formerly involved with Mick Jagger.

Actor Peter Dinklage made a big splash in such films as the critically acclaimed "The Station Agent" despite being only 4'5" due to being born with achondroplasia dwarfism. In 2005 he married theater director Erica Schmidt, who is of normal height.

New Zealand-born country superstar Keith Urban rides high on the music charts despite his height of only 5 feet, 8.5 inches. Actress Nicole Kidman is 2 inches taller at 5'10 1/2". The two wed in Australia in 2006, and welcomed their first child, Sunday Rose Kidman Urban, in July 2008.

Khloe Kardashian, who costarred with sisters Kourtney and Kim in the reality series "Keeping Up with Kardashians," is hardly short, standing all of 5-foot-10. But she still looks small next to her husband, Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom, who's a full foot taller at 6-foot-10. The two tied the knot in September 2009.

Actor Will Arnett made his mark in TV series "Arrested Develpment" and went on to such films as "Blades of Glory." His fellow comic actor Amy Poehler was also in "Blades," as well as TV's "Saturday Night Live" and "Parks and Recreation." The 6-foot-2 1/2 Arnett and 5-foot-2 Poehler gave birth to a son, Archibald "Archie" William Emerson Arnett, in October 2008.

"Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" singer Rod Stewart got a big "yes" to that question from English model and photographer Penny Lancaster even though she's several inches taller than him. Ironically, even though Rod's ex Rachel Hunter succeeded Penny as the face (and body) of Ultimo lingerie, it was Lancaster who succeeded Hunter to become Mrs. Stewart No. 3 in June 2007. After all, she'd already given birth to his son -- one of Rod's seven children by five different women -- in 2005.

Christina Ricci made it big in such films as "The Opposite of Sex" and "Black Snake Moan" despite her diminutive height of 5-foot-1. She was once engaged to comedian Owen Benjamin, a regular correspondent on "The Jay Leno Show," despite their reported 17-inch height difference.

Best known as Meadow on "The Sopranos," Jamie-Lynn Sigler is only 5-foot-5, but her heels make her look taller than actor Jerry Ferrara, whose signature role is Turtle on "Entourage." They were spotted together at the L.A. premiere of "The Hangover" in June 2009.

Though superstar Will Smith's actress/singer wife Jada may have come from "A Different World" (in height, as well as the TV series where she first became a star), the two are one of the most successful power couples in show biz. Their collaborations include "Ali" (he got an Oscar nomination in the title role while she played Cassius Clay's first wife); "All of Us," a sitcom based on themselves, which they executive-produced; and the Will and Jada Foundation to benefit inner-city youth. Together they also produced a son, Jaden, and a daughter, Willow, both of whom have worked with their dad in films.

Paris-born actress, singer and model Emmanuelle Seigner is 5-foot-8, making her 3 inches taller than her husband Roman Polanski, known not only for his acclaimed films, but also for his marriage to murdered actress Sharon Tate and his 1977 arrest for sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl.

Best known for playing Dr. Evil's vertically challenged sidekick Mini-Me in the latter two Austin Powers movies, as well as an infamous stint on VH1's "The Surreal Life" and an Apple Computer commercial with NBA superstar Yao Ming, 2-foot-6 Verne Troyer opted for maxi-matrimony when he wed Genevieve Gallen, a yoga instructor who has shown all of her considerably taller frame in Playboy magazine. But maybe they were just too different: Troyer subsequently filed for an annulment.

Freddie Prinze Jr. of "24" fame is 6-foot-1 while former "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" star Sarah Michelle Gellar is only 5-foot-3. But the difference in altitude didn't stop them from co-starring in "Scooby-Doo" in 2002, nor from getting married the same year (Gellar legally changed her name to Sarah Michelle Prinze in 2007). They had a daughter, Charlotte Grace Prinze, in September 2009.

Novelist Salman Rushdie looms large in the literary world with a prestigious Booker Prize and many other accolades, but stands only 5' 7". Married four times, he was seen at the April 2009 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City with 6-foot-1 actress and singer Pia Glenn.

Talk about "Strange Love": stupendous Danish actress Brigitte Nielsen's many loves have included Sylvester Stallone, football star Mark Gastineau, and rapper Flavor Flav, whom she famously shared smoldering glances with on VH1's "The Surreal Life" and their own spinoff, "Strange Love." But Brigitte wound up choosing a different flavor of man when she married bartender Mattia Dessi (who had appeared in "Strange Love") in July 2006. Her maid of honor was Ivanka Trump.

Sir Mick has been a Rolling Stone in more than one sense of the term, with a long list of loves that includes Bianca Jagger, Jerry Hall, Marianne Faithfull, Janice Dickinson and Carla Bruni -- in fact, the veteran rocker has had seven children with a total of four women. All the more impressive, then, that statuesque fashion designer and ex-model L'Wren Scott has managed to make herself what Jagger calls his "main point of interest." Who says you can't get no satisfaction?

Best known for his comic personas Borat and Bruno, British actor/comedian Sacha Baron Cohen is 6-foot-3, while Australian actress Isla Fisher is only 5'3". But their love towers; Fisher gave birth to their daughter, Olive Baron Cohen, in October 2007. The couple reportedly married in March 2010.
