A tour of Huguette Clark’s unoccupied mansion, Bellosguardo

Frozen in time since the 1950s, Bellosguardo, the summer estate of reclusive heiress Huguette Clark in Santa Barbara, has been kept up at the cost of only $40,000 per month.

The library at Bellosguardo, the Clark summer home in Santa Barbara, Calif., circa 1940. The reclusive heiress Huguette Clark never visited after the early 1950s, but had the staff keep the house in "first-class condition." She died in 2011 at age 104 after drawing attention for living the last 20 years of her life in a simple hospital room, while her mansions sat empty in California, Connecticut and New York. In the California home, hundreds of bound leather volumes are still there, including works by Dante, Homer, Virgil, Maupassant, Dickens, Voltaire, Faust, Milton, and Conrad. Although no one from the immediate family has visited since the early 1950s, the house man dusts and turns the books periodically.

The front driveway rises alongside the bluff and makes a hairpin turn in front of the house. At center right is Anna Clark's circular rose garden. At the upper right, with the red roof, is the estate manager's house. No one from the immediate family has visited since the early 1950s.

Andrée's Cottage, a rustic thatched-roof house at Bellosguardo, the Clark estate in Santa Barbara, is dedicated to Andrée Clark, Huguette's older sister, who died of meningitis in 1919 at age 16, just before her 17th birthday. The adult daughter of the previous owners, Geraldine Graham, lived in this cottage, at least part time, according to books from the 1920s. The Clarks changed the sign on the house from "Geraldine's Cottage" to "Andrée's Cottage."
