In an interview to air Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” House Speaker John Boehner called the alleged actions of the six Baltimore police officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray “outrageous and unacceptable.”

“Public servants should not violate the law,” Boehner told Chuck Todd in an exclusive sit-down at the Capitol. “If these charges are true, it’s outrageous and it’s unacceptable.”

Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby announced charges against the six officers involved in Gray’s arrest Friday. His death while in police custody set off the latest spark in an ongoing national conversation on police relations with African-Americans.

The Republican from Ohio also said the tension between African-Americans and police forces has become a national crisis.

“I think that if you look at what’s happened in the course of the last year,” Boehner said, “you just have to scratch your head.”
