The difficult work of the mudslide recovery volunteers becomes even more staggering when you hear them describe it their own words. Below, we've posted an especially emotional excerpt from a press conference with volunteers from the Darrington Fire Department. Jeff McClelland and his wife Jan McClelland recount finding a baby's nursery -- and the "moment of pride" that comes from doing what they can to help grieving families.

How to Help

If you'd like to contribute to the mudslide recovery, you can make a donation to Red Cross Disaster Relief. Call 800-733-2767 to donate or give $10 by texting "RedCross" to 90999.

In addition, the city of Arlington, Wash., posted a link to the Cascade Valley Hospital Foundation where people can contribute. And the Washington state Combined Fund Drive has launched a special campaign to raise money for the victims.
