More than 7 inches of snow fell in Central Park in five hours Thursday, according to a 9 a.m. unofficial observation by the National Weather Service. That is more than half the six to 12 inches New York City is expected to get throughout the storm.

Visibility is currently at less than a quarter of a mile in Central Park.

New York City public schools are in session, but field trips and after-school activities have been canceled. All transit is running on a regular weekday schedule, though at limited speeds and service, with possible reductions for buses.

Heavy snow accumulations are expected to turn into rain later in the day, with potential sleet and freezing rain during transitions.
