Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to Cairo, Egypt, on Monday to meet with Egyptian officials on the unrest in Gaza.

"The United States — and our international partners — are deeply concerned about the risk of further escalation, and the loss of more innocent life," said State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki in a statement. "We believe there should be a ceasefire as soon as possible — one that restores the cease-fire reached in November of 2012."

Earlier Sunday on "Meet the Press," Kerry said he was hopeful that about finding a way forward to put a ceasefire in place. "So we support the Egyptian initiative, joined in by Israel and others, to have an immediate ceasefire. And we're working that ceasefire very, very hard. I have been in touch all yesterday, day before, many days now, with my counterparts."
