Economic strength is key to defeating terrorism, President Barack Obama said Thursday in an op-ed jointly penned with British Prime Minister David Cameron ahead of talks between the pair at the White House.

“Security and prosperity go hand in hand,” the president wrote in The Times newspaper in the U.K. The piece was also posted on Cameron's official Facebook page.

“By confronting the terrorists who threaten us … and continuing our efforts to advance our economic growth, we will continue to advance the security and prosperity that our people deserve,” the article added.

Obama and Cameron were expected to have dinner together on Thursday before holding meetings at the White House on Friday.

“We know that progress and prosperity are never guaranteed,” the editorial said. “We reaffirm our belief that our ability to defend our freedoms is rooted in our economic strength and the values that we cherish — freedom of expression, the rule of law and strong democratic institutions.”
