Millionaire murder suspect Robert Durst is "doing as well as can be expected" as he awaits extradition to California, his attorney told NBC News Saturday.

"He's in a good place," defense attorney Dick DeGuerin said of the jail where Durst is being held. “They have full medical facilities where he is being held ... I don't think it's unusual for a 71-year-old or a 72-year-old man to have medical conditions. He's a cancer survivor."

Durst, 71, is under suicide watch at a Louisiana jail after being arrested in New Orleans on March 14 on a warrant out of Los Angeles, where he was charged in the 2000 murder of his confidant, Susan Berman.

He was busted on the same day that HBO aired the finale of "The Jinx," its documentary series about Durst. The series covered the 1982 disappearance of his first wife in New York, his acquittal for the dismemberment death of a neighbor in Texas and Berman's slaying.

Durst, who cooperated with the production, was caught on a live microphone in the men's room murmuring that he "killed them all." DeGuerin denies that Durst killed Berman, and said he is eager to have Durst extradited to California.

Durst was charged in Louisiana after investigators allegedly found marijuana and a .38-caliber revolver in Durst’s hotel room.

Law enforcement agencies handling other unsolved murders that have links to the eccentric real-estate heir have reached out to investigators to look for any connection.
