The referendum to break Crimea away from Ukraine and make it a part of Russia passed by an overwhelming margin on Sunday although the U.S. and other Western nations have rejected the legitimacy of the vote.

John McCain, who visited Kiev on Saturday, and U.S. Senate colleague Chris Murphy said the preliminary results were reminiscent of another era.

The final tally was 96.8 percent in favor of splitting from Ukraine, an official announced Monday.
