Did you happen to watch Thursday’s much-hyped U.S. vs. Germany World Cup match on your computer or mobile device? You weren’t alone. ESPN said viewership on its WatchESPN app peaked at more than 1.7 million concurrent users during the match (though some could also have been watching the Portugal-Ghana match, which was also streaming). That’s a record for ESPN’s video-streaming service, though more than a few users noted the app did have its hiccups. Twitter, meanwhile, said there were 3 million tweets sent during the match. That’s far below the 4.9 million tweets during the Ghana vs. USA match, which took place on a Sunday. The most-mentioned players on Twitter? That would be Tim Howard for the U.S. and Thomas Muller for Germany. Google said as the game kicked off, searches in the U.S. for the match were higher than searches for anything else.
