Amazon has imagined a future of online retail that may have you saying "cheese" every time you make a purchase.
The company filed a patent application that would allow shoppers to buy stuff online by taking a selfie instead of punching in a password.
Already the master of the one-click purchase, Amazon is apparently considering the possibility of taking shopping to a whole new (and Kardashian-friendly) level. The patent describes a system that would let a user buy that new pasta maker by performing “certain actions, motions, or gestures, such as to smile, blink, or tilt his or her head.”
These days, people are required to punch in and change passwords all the time. Amazon says the selfie checkout will be a safer, easier way to shop.
“The entry of these passwords … can require the user to turn away from friends or co-workers when entering a password, which can be awkward or embarrassing in many situations,” according to the patent application.
So, Amazon is not just looking out for our online security — it’s also helping us avoid major social faux pas.
