The New York Post's main Twitter account was apparently compromised on Friday, sending a series of apparently untrue tweets on military and macroeconomic topics. The same tweets were also seen on the Twitter account of the wire service UPI.

Markets did not move on the tweets, some of which were immediately deleted.

A separate verified account controlled by the Post acknowledged the hack Friday afternoon, although that account, @NYPostbiz later deleted that note and started rolling out suspicious tweets of its own.

"Some New York Post Twitter accounts were briefly hacked and the matter is being investigated," a Post spokeswoman told CNBC.

Nicholas Chiaia, executive editor of UPI, did not comment beyond acknowledging the hack.

The attack follows Monday's exploitation of U.S. Central Command's Twitter and YouTube accounts, which suddenly started spouting pro-ISIS messages. The FBI and the Department of Defense are investigating that compromise.
