Google Drive may give users 5 GB of free storage

Google's cloud-based storage service isn't even official yet, but word is that when it is -- possibly next week -- it will give users 5 GB of free storage space.

That figure would match what chief competitors Apple and Amazon now offer for free with their cloud-based storage services, iCloud (free with iOS 5) and Cloud Drive, respectively.

Other services, like Dropbox, now give customers 2 GB for free, and Microsoft's SkyDrive gives users up to 25 GB free (with a Hotmail account/Windows Live ID).

( is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

A writer for The Next Web said Monday he received a draft news release from a partner company tied to Google Drive (said partner company is probably getting read the riot act by Mountain View), in which the free storage amount was shared.

Google is not commenting on Google Drive at yet. "We do not comment on rumor or speculation," a spokesman told Monday.
