PlayStation fans, rejoice! Having long been left out of the pop culture phenomenon that is "Minecraft," owners of Sony's current-generation PlayStation 3 console can finally pick up a copy of the acclaimed video game starting on Tuesday, Sony and "Minecraft" developer Mojang announced Monday.

OK, so maybe it's not as cool as playing "Minecraft" on a virtual reality treadmill. But plenty of PlayStation owners will be delighted to hear that one of the most popular video games of all time has made its way to their console of choice.

"Minecraft" has been available for PC users in one form or another since 2009, though a "final" release of a retail version of the game didn't occur until 2011 alongside several mobile versions of the game that were dubbed "Pocket Minecraft." The game was ported to the Xbox 360 in 2012.

A runaway indie gaming success that's sold some 30 million copies, "Minecraft" has achieved overwhelming critical praise for its open-ended, exploratory gameplay that lets users build pretty much anything they want out of tiny Lego-like 3-D cubes.

Owen Hill of Mojang Studios said that the studio is developing other versions of "Minecraft" for Sony's next-generation console, the PlayStation 4, as well as its mobile console, the PS Vita.

No price was given for the PS3 version of the game, which will be available through the PlayStation Network (PSN), but the Xbox 360 version costs $20.
