Apple's back-to-school offers this fall include a $50 App Store gift certificate for those who buy the iPhone, the first time the company has offered that on the phone.

It could be a way to help clear out the iPhone 5, with a new iPhone expected to be announced in September, as well as a way to boost sales for the phone, in heavy competition with Samsung's Galaxy S4. (Older models, the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 are also eligible as part of the deal.)

To qualify for what's known as "education pricing" on the iPhone, as well as the iPad and Apple computers, you need to be a college student, a student who has been accepted to a college, a parent buying for a college student, or a faculty or staff member from any grade level, the company says on its site.

Mac buyers will get up to $100 off computers, and a $100 App Store gift card; iPad buyers will get a $50 App Store gift card. The App Store gift card is good for any purchases within Apple's iTunes Store.

The offers are good through Sept. 6. For more details and the fine print, check Apple's Back to School 2013 Terms and Conditions here.
