"Let guns be silent and politics dominate" those are the words that could signal the end of the near 30-year campaign of violence by Kurdish PKK rebels in Turkey. Their leader, Abdullah Ocalan, has been in solitary confinement on an island off Istanbul since being captured in 1999. He has sent a message - read out to hundreds of thousands of Kurds gathered in south-east Turkey - urging them to lay down their arms and withdraw to Iraq.
