Two passenger trains collided early Saturday on Indonesia’s Java island, killing at least 11 people and injuring several others, a hospital official said.

Both trains were heading to the capital from central Java’s main city of Surabaya they collided near Jampringan station, said Djoko Susilo, a nurse at a nearby hospital.

One of the trains had apparently stopped, and the other slammed into it from behind, he said.

Susilo said so far 11 bodies had arrived at the hospital, along with several injured people.

He said rescuers told him up to seven more people were still feared trapped in the wreckage.

Train accidents are common on Indonesia’s aging railway network, especially at crossings. Last year, a family of 12 was killed when a train crashed into a minibus on Java, and on average dozens die each year in similar accidents.
