Three people died and two were missing after being caught in a fierce storm while watching a fireworks display, authorities said Monday. Hundreds of others were injured, reports said.

Heavy rains and winds up to 75 miles per hour hit the capital as an estimated 1.5 million people watched a fireworks display and air show along the Danube River on Sunday, officials said.

Nearly 300 others were injured, including 40 in life-threatening condition, the MTI news agency said.

Two died after being struck by a falling tree. It was unclear how the third person died, authorities said.

Police were searching Monday for two people who disappeared after winds capsized their boat in the Danube's cold waters.

The fireworks were part of Hungary's annual St. Stephen's Day celebration honoring the country's first king.

Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany met with officials to try to determine if it should have been canceled. Several other counties had canceled planned fireworks displays because of the ominous weather forecast.
