A former gangster was taken into custody after a shooting rampage left one policeman dead and three others injured, police said Friday.

The gunman, who had holed up in his home with his ex-wife as a hostage, emerged with his hands up and was taken into custody by police in this town in central Japan, said prefectural (state) police spokesman Atsushi Kabahara.

Hisato Obayashi, 50, went on a shooting spree at his home, shooting the couple's son, daughter and two policemen. One of the officers died. He then kept his ex-wife hostage for more than 24 hours as nearly 200 police surrounded the house in a tense standoff.

Obayashi's wife escaped from a window hours earlier, with no serious injuries.
