Two women have been arrested in the slaying of a honeymooning British couple at an Antiguan resort, police said Thursday.

The suspects, whose names and ages were not released, appeared before a judge and were charged with crimes "connected to the murders" of Benjamin and Catherine Mullany, the Royal Antigua Police Force said in a statement.

But authorities would not provide further details of the charges or say what role the women allegedly played in last month's attack at the couple's beachfront cottage.

Police Inspector Cornelius Charles told The Associated Press he expected more arrests would be forthcoming, but he declined to give details to avoid jeopardizing the investigation.

The Mullanys, both 31 and from Wales, were married July 12 and went to Antigua for a two-week honeymoon. On the day they were to leave the country, they were shot before dawn at the Cocos Hotel in the island's southwest. Police have said robbery appeared to be a motive, but have not specified how many assailants were suspected.

The government of Antigua and Barbuda has since proposed new anti-crime measures to deal with a spike in violence in an island nation heavily dependent on tourism.
