Apple top smartphone maker in U.S.: Nielsen

Google's Android operating system is the top operating system in the U.S. smartphone market, but Apple is the top manufacturer of smartphones, according to a new report from Nielsen.

Google's Android operating system is the top operating system in the U.S. smartphone market, but Apple is the top manufacturer of smartphones, according to a new report from Nielsen.

June data shared by the firm shows that the Android OS has 39 percent of the consumer smartphone market (up 1 percent from May), with Apple's iOS having 28 percent (up 1 percent from May), while RIM's BlackBerry OS is 20 percent (a drop of 1 percent from May).

"However, because Apple is the only company manufacturing smartphones with the iOS operating system, it is clearly the top smartphone manufacturer in the United States," Nielsen said.

Among other leading manufacturers are "HTC, whose Android phones represents 14 percent of the smartphone market and whose Windows Mobile/WP7 devices account for 6 percent of the market; and Motorola, whose Android devices are owned by 11 percent of smartphone consumers," Nielsen said.

"Samsung’s Android devices are used by 8 percent of smartphone owners while their Windows Mobile/WP7 phones are used by 2 percent of smartphone owners."
