Two Saudi policemen were wounded and four wanted militants were arrested during a shootout Monday on a highway in the capital, officials said.

One suspect fired a rocket-propelled grenade toward police, but it was unclear if that attack was responsible for the wounded police, security officials said.

The official told The Associated Press an unknown number of militants fled in a Chevrolet sedan and were being chased by Saudi police.

Smoke was seen rising from the area of the mid-afternoon clash in Riyadh’s eastern suburbs, the Saudi officials told The Associated Press. They spoke on condition they not be named.

Traffic was snarled in both directions on the highway where the shootout occurred and police cordoned the road and surrounding suburbs as they tried to trap the militants.

It was not yet clear what the militants were wanted for or if they are on a list Saudi authorities released of 26 most-wanted terrorists following bombings in Riyadh on May 12, 2003, that killed 26 people.

Monday’s clash was the second in two weeks. One militant was killed and a companion was wounded during a shootout last week in Riyadh.
