Spotify announced a new line of Artist Apps today (June 27) that gives music fans a front-row seat to hear more from their favorite performers, including other music selected by headlined artists. The streaming music service was the first to introduce apps to extend its listening options and help users personalize their experience. Today's selection is small — just four artists — but they cover a big swath of style. Quincy Jones headlines R&B, Tiësto covers the global electronic dance scene (soon to be joined by Steve Aoki), Disturbed does rock and metal, and Rancid curates punk. Spotify said more apps from rock, pop, hip-hop and jazz will be released in the coming weeks. Spotify's app center is still very small. You'll find just under 40 apps, including the new artist apps. All are free. Double click on the App Finder to get started. When you add an app to your account, it will appear under the Apps heading in Spotify's left-hand navigation pane. While each artist app has its own features, they are all organized in playlists. For example, Quincy Jones talks about Duke Ellington's influence on his music in one playlist that includes songs from Ellington and other jazz greats. Tiësto recommends a single of the week, his Top 20 and a festival of the month playlist. Each playlist can be instantly added to your own collection.
