The father of 13-year old Yahya Sweed talks with his son to try and cheer him up on July 16, 2013, a day after he was released from hospital. One of the boy's legs was amputated following shelling by government forces on the Syrian town of Kfar Nubul.

An estimated 5,000 Syrians are dying every month in the country's civil war and refugees are fleeing at a rate not seen since the 1994 Rwanda genocide, U.N. officials said Tuesday.
