Authorities in Washington on late Thursday released the recordings of emergency workers responding to the shooting that left the gunman and two other students dead and three injured at a high school near Seattle last week.
"We are all in the cafeteria," a man said. A woman then asked: “Is the shooter down?” "Affirmative," the man replied. "Shooter is down," the woman said.
Jaylen Fryberg, 15, is accused of using a relative's legal .40 caliber Beretta to shoot his friends and then himself last Friday at Marysville Pilchuck High School. Fryberg did not leave behind a note, but Snohomish County Sheriff Ty Trenary has said it was clear he targeted the victims.
One girl, Zoe Galasso, was killed at the scene. Another, Gia Soriano, 14, died at the hospital on Sunday evening. Shaylee Chuckulnaskit, 14, was in critical condition at Providence Regional Medical Center while Andrew Fryberg, 15, was "critical in intensive care" and Nate Hatch, 14, was "satisfactory" at Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center, the hospital said.
Much of the emergency call recordings capture authorities locking down the scene and moving students and school safely out of the site. But one seems to be about Fryberg's father appearing in the area.
"I’m down here at the 51st roundabout with the subject’s father," said a man, apparently an emergency responder. Another man a few minutes later replied to him: "Whoever was on 108th with dad, try to get him in a car and hold him there for a while."
In another recording, law enforcement officers working another case can be heard leaving their investigation to help out at the school.
"We're gonna respond to the high school. We're going to let our guy go," a man said. "I think given what's going on right now, real world overrides."
